Diversity in academia is crucial, but there are significant challenges that need to be addressed. The concept of diversity often lacks clarity in terms of who we are talking about and what we are trying to achieve. Different groups like international researchers, refugees, and descendants of immigrants face distinct challenges. Academia has historically lacked diversity, with women, ethnic minorities, and other underrepresented groups significantly underrepresented, especially in leadership and senior roles. Universities are taking steps like targeted support programs, fair recruitment practices, and flexible work arrangements to improve diversity and inclusion. But more coordinated effort is needed across institutions and funders.
